Online Sports Betting Tax Powers Fiscal Growth in Peru

Peru’s National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) has announced record tax revenue for February 2025, with online sports betting playing a key role. In an interview with local media, SUNAT’s head, Víctor Mejía, revealed that the newly introduced tax on online sports betting generated PEN 5 million in its first month, contributing to a total of PEN 56 million collected from digital platforms and gambling activities.

SUNAT also reported that 56 digital platforms, including those offering online gaming and betting, are now registered under Peru’s tax system and have been contributing since December 2024. This marks a significant shift in the regulation of the digital economy, ensuring that online operators are held accountable for their tax obligations.

Mejía stressed that the rapid growth of the online sports betting industry has made it a valuable source of state revenue. The success of these tax measures demonstrates Peru’s commitment to modernizing its fiscal policies and securing long-term benefits from emerging digital markets.
