FanDuel Launches ‘The Comeback’—A New Initiative for Safer Gambling

Doubling down on its commitment to safer gambling, top U.S. platform FanDuel has launched “The Comeback With Craig Carton,” a new monthly morning TV show aimed at raising awareness about problem gambling and recovery. Hosted by Craig Carton, a prominent radio and television personality who has served as a FanDuel Responsible Gaming ambassador since 2021, the show will be broadcast on FanDuel TV Extra and YouTube. It will feature high-profile guests, including former NBA player Randy Livingston, who will share their personal experiences with gambling addiction.

The primary goal of “The Comeback” is to reduce the stigma surrounding gambling addiction by broadening the conversation. The show seeks to highlight available support resources while reinforcing the message that recovery is indeed possible. Having Craig Carton, a 56-year-old New Yorker with a well-known history of gambling struggles, as the host is a strategic advantage for Flutter-owned FanDuel. Carton’s previous experience as co-host of the popular morning sports radio show “Boomer and Carton” on WFAN, New York City’s iconic sports radio station, adds significant draw to the new program.

Using brand ambassadors and influencers to promote gambling can be contentious, given their potential impact on underage audiences and recent controversies such as celebrity sponsorships with unregulated gambling sites. However, few betting brands have explored what happens when ambassadors are tasked with promoting positive gambling behaviors. By aligning with the right ambassador like Carton, FanDuel demonstrates a commitment to responsible gambling. The Comeback

Carton’s candid approach to discussing gambling addiction gives “The Comeback” a genuine opportunity to make a positive impact. He reflects on his own journey, stating, “As someone who has personally navigated the challenges of gambling addiction, I understand the impact it can have on your life and the lives of those you care about. My mission for this show is to inspire hope, offer support, and remind everyone that the path to regaining control starts with understanding.”

This initiative is not FanDuel’s first foray into promoting safer gambling. In 2021, the company proactively implemented slot stake limits in anticipation of the UK’s forthcoming Gambling Act reforms, doing so more than four years before the new regulations were formalized. Additionally, FanDuel is one of only two U.S. gambling operators to offer 1x wagering requirements on bonuses, a practice that aligns with responsible gambling standards.

As the annual Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) program unfolds, FanDuel is leading the charge, though other industry players are also stepping up their efforts. The American Gaming Association has revitalized its well-known “Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly” campaign, while the National Collegiate Athletic Association has introduced its “Don’t Be a Loser” advertisement to address student-athlete harassment during the March Madness basketball tournament.

In an effort to remain competitive, market leader DraftKings has also launched its own campaign, “It’s More Fun When It’s Fun,” featuring prominent figures and a nostalgic twist with a rendition of Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler.” This ad aims to engage bettors by highlighting the excitement of responsible gambling.

While the iGaming industry often faces scrutiny for operator missteps and negligence, it’s essential to recognize and celebrate the instances when it gets it right. “The Comeback With Craig Carton” stands out as a positive example of how the industry can take meaningful steps to address gambling issues for the benefit of all.
