Ghana Gaming Commission Implements Tougher Betting Regulations

The Ghana Gaming Commission is set to enforce stricter regulations on betting companies operating near schools and religious institutions. Commissioner Emmanuel Siisi Quainoo highlighted the importance of rigorous enforcement to safeguard minors and vulnerable groups. Operators found breaching zoning rules will face significant penalties, while the Commission also focuses on combating gambling addiction.

Tighter Zoning Rules for Betting Operators

The Gaming Commission is taking steps to prevent betting companies from establishing operations near schools and religious centers. Commissioner Quainoo reiterated that any facilities violating these zoning regulations will face strict consequences.

Enforcement Measures and Penalties for Non-Compliance

During a recent inspection, Quainoo emphasized that the Commission will deny license applications to operators attempting to set up businesses in prohibited areas.

“As part of our mandate, gaming operators are barred from opening facilities near schools and religious institutions. If an applicant’s proposed location is too close to these areas, we will not issue a license. Our objective is to protect schoolchildren from being lured into gambling at the expense of their education… We will take decisive action against illegal gambling operators and ensure the law is strictly enforced,” Quainoo stated.

Rapid Growth of Ghana’s Betting Industry

Ghana’s betting sector is experiencing significant growth. The country currently has 25 licensed sports betting operators, 12 online casinos, and 24 physical casinos regulated by the Gaming Commission.

According to a TGM Research survey, 41.7% of Ghanaians engaged in sports betting last year, positioning Ghana as one of Africa’s top four betting markets.

Combating Gambling Addiction

In addition to regulatory measures, the Commission is addressing the issue of gambling addiction. It plans to partner with psychologists to offer support and assistance to individuals struggling with gambling-related problems.
